TUV Rheinland Says RailRunner’s Prospects in Europe Are Good

TÜV Rheinland Analysis Confirms Major Advances in Bi-modal Technology by RailRunner®

Study will contribute to approval process for use of RailRunner in the European Union

WALTHAM, MA, September 14, 2010 – TÜV Rheinland Group has issued a report identifying the innovative bi-modal technology of RailRunner NA as promising for approval for use in the European marketplace. The study focuses on the “lower lifecycle costs end environmental benefits, which result from the technical innovations of the RailRunner system itself.” It describes the cost-saving potentials of the RailRunner technology as “outstanding” and concludes that the prospect is good that the technology will win approval by the European Rail Agency under its Technical Specification of Interoperability.

TÜV is a globally recognized company that documents the safety and quality of new and existing products, systems and services. The intent of the review was to examine the economic and environmental benefits of the RailRunner technology and its viability as a direct solution to improve and expand intermodal transport within the European Union. The report was commissioned by RailRunner at the request of several European approval authorities who sought an authoritative and independent review of the company’s technology. While the report specifically addresses the European market, the report findings may also be applied to the North American market, as well.

This report serves as a supplement to the recent Analysis and Comparison of Intermodal Transport Chains in European Markets by Studiengesellschaft für den Kombinierten Verkehr (SGKV). The TÜV report concludes that, as a result of RailRunner’s significant advancements, the technology can meet the latest Technical Specification of Interoperability (TSI) standards as issued by the European Rail Agency (ERA).

“As a result of the innovative elements developed and being part of the RailRunner technology this bi-modal system promises to be successfully implemented in Europe,” the report says.

It reviews the political and economic reasons for the failure of previous bi-modal systems in the European market. But the report explores the recent political and economic changes, such as

  • The privatization of previously state-owned railways
  • The accompanying increased competition among carriers (across national borders)
  • Higher highway transport costs and
  • Increased concern about environmental issues, including noise reduction

The report cites the RailRunner bogie as “the most important and valuable innovation” of the RailRunner technology. The articulated design reduces friction, thus reducing wear and tear on wheels and track, as well as noise, while improving energy efficiency. It also reduces maintenance costs on both the bogies and the track.

TÜV’s report also cited a number of advantages of the RailRunner chassis, which can operate on road and rail and include air springs.

The report concludes that:

  • Reduced friction and better aerodynamics could reduce fuel consumption by 15%
  • Maintenance and spare parts costs could be reduced by as much as 30%
  • More operating time should increase fleet profitability and
  • Future track fees, which depend on the amount of wear and noise “will make RailRunner even more competitive”

TÜV Rheinland (http://www.tuv.com), with 490 locations in 61 countries is one of the world’s leading groups of companies providing technical and homologation services. At the heart of the company, founded in 1872, is the sustainable development of safety and quality in interaction between man, technology and the environment. SGKV study says RailRunner ready for Europe

Study by SGKV Determines RailRunner® Bimodal Technology is Economical, Competitive and “Ready for the European Market”

WALTHAM, MA, August 31, 2010 – RailRunner has been designated as an effective technology for bi-modal transport by Studiengesellschaft für den Kombinierten Verkehr (SGKV) one of the foremost organizations studying intermodal transportation in Europe. The SGKV study is a comparative analysis of existing intermodal transport technologies with regard to their operational efficiencies, capital costs and environmental implications, as well as several other parameters.

The report compares the use of RailRunner technology with competing intermodal technologies in transporting 45-foot European containers, 40-foot ISO containers, 20-foot tank containers, swap bodies, semi-trailers and roll-on roll off systems. Using a hypothetical Hamburg-to-Budapest itinerary, The report says RailRunner identifies RailRunner NA, Inc., as having the best intermodal (road/rail) technology available based on multiple critical factors, including the following:

  • Payload to tare ratio,
  • Environmental impact, energy consumption and CO2 emissions
  • Labor cost and operational costs per transported unit,
  • Number of units per train,
  • Ease of integration into existing intermodal systems,
  • Terminal investment costs,
  • Equipment costs, and
  • Maintenance costs.

For example, the SGKV report estimates the effective ratio of payload to tare weight at 2:1 for RailRunner with a 45-foot container, while the rate for a standard T5 railcar is 1.1:1. The rate of CO2 emissions are 30% to 43% lower with the RailRunner technology according to SGKV. And the cost of installing a RailRunner terminal are 20% to 25% that of a traditional intermodal terminal, while the operating costs are 16% lower than trucking and 27% lower than a T5 train.

“Another remarkable advantage of the RailRunner system is that it easily can be integrated into existing intermodal transport systems,” the SGVK report says. “RailRunner can be fully comprised in existing terminals, thus enlarging the overall terminal capacity. The costs are relatively small.”

SGKV (http://www.sgkv.de), founded in 1928 and located in Berlin, Germany, is a well-known, non-profit research association that provides research and analytical evaluations as well as consulting services to companies and governmental units mainly involved in intermodal transportation in Europe. It receives financial support from the German government, as well as from member companies belonging to the organization and associated to intermodal transportation. This study was commissioned by RailRunner, because of increasing interest by logistic and intermodal companies in its new technology, and based upon the request of several German and European approval authorities who required independent reviews of RailRunner technology by respected European institutions.

RailRunner Raises $13.4 Million

RailRunner Announces Closing of $13.4 Million Financing

Additional investment will enable company to capitalize on strengthening relationships with key transportation providers and shippers and address rapidly expanding market opportunities

WALTHAM, MA, February 26, 2010 – RailRunner, N.A., Inc., the developer of innovative rail products and services providing low-cost intermodal transportation solutions to underserved markets worldwide, today announced it has received an investment of $13.4 million through a private placement. U.S. Boston Capital Corporation acted as the placement agent.

“Our strengthening relationships with rail partners, ocean carriers and shippers seeking innovative solutions that shift as much freight transport as possible from highways to rail has created significant interest worldwide in the RailRunner system,” said Charles Foskett, RailRunner CEO. “This additional capital will enable RailRunner to capitalize on this significant market opportunity and meet the significant demand for our products and services.”

RailRunner’s unique Terminal Anywhere™ system enables shippers to combine the economics of rail with the flexibility of trucking, while linking directly into the international containerized shipping network. In October, RailRunner signed an agreement with Kolkata-based Stone India to manufacture, operate, distribute, and sell RailRunner products in India. In November, RailRunner introduced a chassis for temperature-controlled containers for shippers of produce, frozen or refrigerated foods, pharmaceuticals, or other products requiring temperature controlled transportation.

By allowing containers to be predominantly carried by more energy efficient rail, RailRunner’s technology can significantly mitigate the impact of high fuel process and their volatility in the transportation formula, while at the same time, providing more direct, cost-effective access to the containerized transport network, opening new markets for shippers and rail carriers.

RailRunner intermodal trains are assembled directly from the container-carrying RailRunner highway chassis, using compact specialized rail vehicles called “bogies.” The chassis and container are coupled to the bogie. The highway wheels are raised pneumatically, allowing the highway wheels to clear the track, thus transforming the road vehicle to a rail vehicle in a matter of minutes. Train assembly requires no lifting of the shipping container, and is fast, simple and cost-efficient, comparing favorably with container unit loading times of traditional intermodal.

This advanced RailRunner system requires far less capital equipment and cost for building and operating terminals, therefore RailRunner train assembly points can be located in many places where container volumes do not support the investment in a traditional intermodal site. Bringing the Terminal Anywhere closer to the shipper reduces the distance cargo has to travel by truck, while retaining the flexibility of trucking in the transportation network.

RailRunner’s Road-Ready intermodal means low-cost shipping for businesses and communities, with lower carbon emissions for every ton of cargo moved.
