RailRunner Announces ReeferPro 100 40′ Chassis for Uninterrupted Cold Chain Service

WALTHAM, MA, November 16, 2009 – RailRunner™, N.A., Inc., developer and marketer of advanced container-based intermodal transport systems, today announced availability of its Model ReeferProTM 100 chassis for temperature-controlled ISO containers.

ReeferPro 100 was developed specifically for shippers of produce, frozen or refrigerated foods, pharmaceuticals and other products requiring temperature controlled transportation. Shippers may now take full advantage of the many benefits of shipping via rail due to this convenient, safe, uninterrupted cold chain technology. Ports, inland terminals and shippers no longer need to supply their own power plugs, hazardous fueling capacities and/or gensets for supplying electric power to containers while parked, during road movements or on rail, simplifying both the supply chain and backhaul opportunities. RailRunner’s bi-modal ReeferPro 100 chassis provides an air-cushion suspension on rail, especially suitable for sensitive and fragile cargo, up to six-day uninterrupted power supply, and continuous monitoring of fuel supply and GPS location. For modem-equipped containers, ReeferPro can also monitor cargo temperature, humidity and air circulation. ReeferPro 100 enables a shipper to load a refrigerated container at a farm or food processor and, without requiring any cranes or other expensive lifting equipment, to seamlessly ship by rail and/or road, providing “doorto-door”, same-box, temperature-controlled service. For domestic applications, ReeferPro 100 obviates the need for internal container gensets, which increases cube and lowers tare weight and cost.

ReeferPro 100 is a rail-qualified chassis compatible with RailRunner’s established line of air-ride, bimodal products. It includes a side-mounted genset and fuel tank that can supply up to six days of uninterrupted power to an ISO temperature-controlled 40 ft. refrigerated container. The genset and fuel tank are mounted to provide for vertical and horizontal road and rail clearance, using high-security, tamper-proof enclosures. ReeferPro 100 carries a payload of 45,620 lbs. or 20,200 kg.

“ReeferPro 100 fills an important and unique market need”, said Wolfgang Graaff, RailRunner Chief Operating Officer, who holds numerous patents on containers and refrigerated container products. “Its high security, air-cushioned ride characteristics can serve both domestic and international customers, protecting against product damage and theft. Up to six days of uninterrupted, monitored cold chain offers new opportunities in shipping refrigerated cargos to reach both local and long-distance markets.”

ReeferPro 100 is available for delivery during the first quarter of 2010 for orders placed during the IANA 2009 conference.

RailRunner Raises $11.7 Million

New investment to enable company to move quickly in fast-growing market

WALTHAM, MA, Aug. 5, 2008 – RailRunner, N.A., Inc., the developer of an innovative truck-and-rail system designed to bring containerized rail transport to a much wider range of shippers, today announced it has received an investment of $11.7 million through a private placement. U.S. Boston Capital Corporation acted as placement agent.

“Soaring fuel prices and heightened environmental concerns have only strengthened the trend to shift as much freight transport as possible from highways to railroads. That has created strong interest worldwide in the RailRunner system,” said Charles Foskett, RailRunner CEO. “This additional capital enables us to move more quickly to meet this surging market demand.”

RailRunner ‘s Terminal Anywhere™ Technology allows shippers to make greater use of rail in transporting their goods because it makes intermodal transportation cost effective for shorter distances and for smaller markets. RailRunner enables a shipper to shift a loaded container from road to rail and back without transloading any freight or the need for terminals and expensive cranes to lift the container from one mode to another. This puts container-based shipping within reach of the huge market of manufacturers, farmers, shippers, wholesalers and retailers who are not located near traditional intermodal hubs.

RailRunner uses specially designed chassis and rail bogies (the sets of railroad wheels that fit under the chassis, front and back, transforming it into a rail vehicle). Once on the chassis, a standard shipping container can be hauled over the road just like a traditional trailer or it can be quickly moved onto bogies to move by rail. The standardized containers handled by the RailRunner system can be interchanged among all modes of transport: road, rail, ship and air. Freight can be moved onto and off of the rails by a truck at a siding with minimal infrastructure changes, bringing low-cost rail intermodal container shipping to the short-haul rail market and, potentially, to hundreds of smaller cities and towns in North America and Europe.

Report Shows Major Intermodal Opportunity in Europe

Study by Leading Intermodal Research Group Shows Opportunity for New Technology in European Markets

Report identifies RailRunner as “the most advanced technology”

WALTHAM, MA, March 14, 2007 – A study by one of the foremost organizations studying intermodal transportation in Europe has concluded that the market there is ripe for the introduction of a new, low-cost system that can deliver the benefits of containerized truck/rail transport more fully throughout the European Union (EU). The study underscores the opportunity in Eastern European markets that are dramatically underserved by the traditional intermodal system, built around the expensive “hubs” for shifting from truck to rail and back, primarily located in Western Europe.

The report by the Studiengesellschaft für den Kombinierten Verkehr (Research Association for Intermodal Transport or SGKV) identifies RailRunner NA, Inc., as having the
most advanced bimodal (truck/rail) technology available and a business model well suited to the structure of the EU. RailRunner is a U.S.-based leader in bringing the “green technology” benefits of intermodal transport to a much wider range of markets, helping reduce fuel consumption (and the accompanying pollution) of transportation, while serving as a spur to economic growth.

SGKV, founded in 1928, is a non-profit research institute that provides research on and consulting services to companies and governmental units involved in intermodal transportation in Europe. It receives majority financial support from the German government, as well as from companies involved in intermodal transportation. The study was commissioned by RailRunner.

SGKV identifies three key factors that create a conducive environment for a new containerized intermodal system such as RailRunner’s:

  • The unification of rail regulation across the EU, due early this year, allowing new intermodal technologies to serve a large, integrated market instead of grappling with a series of smaller, national markets.
  • The commercial liberalization of the EU rail market, opening it to a wide array of transport providers.
  • The pace-setting economic growth in parts of Europe – especially Eastern European countries – that are not now served by traditional intermodal transport.

The study singles out RailRunner as offering “the most advanced bimodal technology” – proposed or implemented – and also notes that other systems placed ownership of the separate physical pieces of the systems in different ownership, “which causes conflicts in case of technical problems and interoperability.” Under the RailRunner system, the same organization owns and maintains the rail-or-highway chassis and the “bogies” that allow the chassis to run on the rails. The containers are all standard international ISO containers.

SGKV also concludes that RailRunner offers the lowest overall cost per ton shipped in any markets that do not currently have a traditional intermodal terminal with high volumes; that it provides by far the lowest tare (bogie plus chassis) weight – and thus, by far the greatest fuel efficiency – of the few systems that are in actual use; that the RailRunner system’s articulated bogies cause less friction and wear and tear on wheels and axles – improving fuel efficiency, while reducing maintenance costs; and that RailRunner operates with the lowest capital investment for infrastructure and terminal equipment needs: according to RailRunner estimates, no more than 20 percent of the investment required for traditional intermodal terminals.
